Peterborough edge Bradford on penalties after 4-4 replay thriller

Peterborough are through to the FA Cup third round after beating Bradford City 3-2 in a penalty shoot out with the sides locked at 4-4 after extra time in a thrilling second round replay at Valley Parade.

Peterborough’s leading scorer Ivan Toney scored a hat-trick, including a late equaliser after Bradford had fought back from 3-1 down at half time to lead 4-3.

Toney shook Bradford by scoring twice in two minutes to put the visitors 2-0 up after 20 minutes. The first came after Peterborough won a free kick just inside the Bradford half in the 18th minute and Toney, seeing Ben Wilson off his line, lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head from 45 yards.

Before Bradford could recover, 22-year-old Toney, who joined Peterborough from Newcastle last summer, scored the visitors’ second in the 20th minute. Marcus Maddison delivered a cross from the left and the alert Toney dived to head the ball low into the corner of the net.

Bradford hit back two minutes later through George Miller. David Ball’s shot was deflected on to the post by defender Rhys Bennett and Miller followed up to tap the ball into the net.

Peterborough restored their two-goal advantage in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half. Siriki Dembele skilfully worked his way down the left before crossing low across the face of goal. Wilson got a hand to the ball but could only divert into the path of Maddison who tapped the ball into the net at the far post to put the visitors 3-1 ahead at half time.

Bradford then levelled the scores with two goals in four minutes at the start of the second half. Their second came in the 53rd minute after Lewis O’Brien fired in a shot which spun into the air. Jack Payne kept the ball in play and Ball scored with a low right-foot shot.

The home side kept up the pressure and right back Paul Caddis equalised in the 57th minute with a close header from Ball’s looping cross to the far post.

Bradford then went ahead for the first time in the match in the 72nd minute when Miller tapped in from close range for his second goal of the match after the visitors’ defence failed to clear Jack Payne’s corner.

Toney completed his hat trick with Peterborough’s equaliser in the 83rd minute when Maddison’s cross found him unmarked and he scored with a looping header.

Bradford’s Karl Henry, Payne and Caddis missed their penalties in the shootout as Peterborough progressed to a third round tie at Middlesbrough.
