Liam Boyce and Scott Fraser scored for Burton to condemn Sam Ricketts to a 2-1 defeat in his first league game as Shrewsbury boss.
Feji Okenabirhie pulled one back in stoppage time to set up a nervy finish but it was Albion who leapfrogged their visitors in the Sky Bet League One table.
Boyce struck after just three minutes, putting pressure on goalkeeper Steve Arnold as he went to clear Mat Sadler’s back-pass and reaping his rewards as he managed to block the clearance and watch as the rolled into the net.
Fraser’s fifth goal of the season eased the pressure in the second half after Shrewsbury had looked the more likely, the Scottish midfielder finding the back of the net nine minutes from time with a rasping shot that went in off a post.
Okenabirhie had the best chances for the visitors, twice testing home goalkeeper Brad Collins and also seeing John Brayford deflect a goalbound shot wide before firing in low beyond the keeper after a scramble in the box.
