Caretaker Bassey confident AFC Wimbledon will appoint right person as new boss

AFC Wimbledon caretaker manager Simon Bassey is sure the club will make a wise appointment of their next permanent boss after supporters chanted for Wally Downes to get the job during the FA Cup win at Halifax.
The Dons will play a Checkatrade Trophy match against Chelsea Under-21s on Tuesday, by which time a new manager may be in charge of the League One side.
Bassey ensured that whoever next takes on the job will have an FA Cup third-round date in the diary for January as Wimbledon shrugged off an unsteady start to win 3-1 at The Shay thanks to goals from Ben Purrington, Anthony Wordsworth and Joe Pigott.
A late James Hanson own goal was National League team Halifax’s small consolation.
Bassey admitted Wimbledon “luckily” led at the break, following Purrington’s deflected strike, and he did not spare the players in the dressing room during the interval.
He said: “It masked nothing because the first half was not good enough but the second half was much better.”
Now he awaits news of the next manager’s identity, with popular former Wimbledon midfielder Downes thought to be in the frame.
“Wally is obviously a cult hero at the club,” Bassey said. “I’ll work for this football club and will continue to do so until told otherwise. The board has made fantastic decisions in the last 17 years and I’m sure they’ll make another one.”
Halifax boss Jamie Fullarton saw his team spurn a string of early chances, and said: “I’m fairly disappointed obviously but it’s the reality of football.
“When you’re on top and create the chances that you do, it’s vital that you score.
“Then Wimbledon showed their quality. They’re two divisions above us and their first two goals were exceptional strikes which changed the course of the game.”
