McPhillips praises Blackpool after comfortable win over Burton

Terry McPhillips insists his Blackpool side are going to take some stopping after they brought up their fifth win in a row in all competitions by beating Burton 3-0.

Three second half goals in the space of just 12 minutes were enough for the Tangerines, who now sit seventh in the League One table.

Armand Gnanduillet, Jordan Thompson and Joe Dodoo were all on the scoresheet and McPhillips is delighted to see some momentum finally build.

“It is five wins in a row which is brilliant. We didn’t do well in the first half which is not like us,” he said.

“When we are off in the first, we do it in the second and it was a great way to start the second half. Our front two were powerful in the second half and a real handful. We were clinical and I’m really pleased.

“The quality in the final third was the difference, we have got some good players, we really turned it on in the second half.

“We had to do better and we talked about it at half-time. We knew we could do better and we did.

“The goals were superb and it’s good to get the clean sheet as well. The back three were immense in the second half as was the whole team.

“We knew it was going to be an expansive game but we had plenty of shots today and we were clinical, that was the difference.”

Burton did well to keep Blackpool at bay in the first half but their concentration lapsed after the break and they were severely punished.

Gnanduillet took 25 seconds of the second half to score, finishing low into the bottom corner.

And that opened the floodgates, with Thompson finishing off Dodoo’s pass four minutes later before Dodoo scored a brilliant scissor kick.

“Everything came tumbling down. The first goal to concede was very poor, we could have held the ball up on the halfway line,” said Burton boss Nigel Clough.

“We had as many chances as them but have conceded three goals. These things happen in football, we have to deal better with the first goal and start better after the break.

“We had to try and get back into the game and not concede a second and it was very difficult form there.

“It could have been very different not conceding the first goal when we did. The main priority is not to concede the second and we did that within the four or five minutes

“We are conceding goals far too easily, they showed a greater desire to keep a clean sheet than us. This is a setback and we have to come back with a good performance in our next game.”
