Cook and Clement take the point

Rival bosses Paul Cook and Paul Clement were in agreement that a point was a fair result after Wigan and Reading cancelled themselves out in a Sky Bet Championship stalemate at the DW Stadium.

The home side created the better chances and even had a goal from Nick Powell ruled out for offside.

But the visitors looked comfortable in possession and remained a threat on the counter throughout the 0-0 draw.

Cook, whose side had lost four matches in a row heading into the international break, said: “I thought we had the better of the chances, albeit Reading had more of the ball at times.

“We had a couple of great opportunities to win the game, which we haven’t taken.

“But after the recent run of defeats, it is nice to get a point.

“We’ve managed to put down a marker, we’ve stopped the rot, and it’s now a case of whether we can build from here.

“In recent weeks we’ve been giving individual errors away, but today we didn’t.

“It was a clean sheet, a good clean sheet,a comfortable clean sheet. Our lads can defend well when they are challenged.

“Sometimes when you get involved with trying to be good going the other way, you can forget your habits.

“For us, it’s very much about going back to basics and trying to build some blocks that can see us retain our status as a Championship side.”

Clement, too, was keen to accentuate the positives.

“I thought it was a good 0-0, a hard-fought game,” said Clement, whose side have picked up in recent weeks after a woeful start to the campaign.

“Based on the way we’ve been defending this season I was pleased with the clean sheet.

“Wigan obviously had a couple of good chances, but I thought equally we had control of the game and produced some good moments.,

“It could have gone either way, and a draw was probably a fair result.

“I thought we finished the game well, and if either team was going to win, it was going to be us.”

Despite having won only once in the league on the road this season – at Preston in September – Reading were not content to settle for a point at any time.

Clement added: “I put on more attacking players, I changed the front man, the man behind, so we always had the belief we could win the game.

“When there is space – either between the lines or in behind – we look a decent side.

“In the last three games, we’ve won one and drawn two so it’s a better run than we’ve been on previously.”
