Cheltenham end wait for home league win

Cheltenham earned their first home victory in League Two this season with a 2-1 win over Newport County.

First half goals from Will Boyle and Tyrone Barnett proved enough to earn the Robins a fourth straight win in all competitions – but their first at Whaddon Road in the league since April.

Newport’s Mickey Demetriou missed a penalty in the 86th minute before Antoine Semenyo pulled one back three minutes later to set up a tense finish, but Cheltenham held on.

The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute when Newport could only half clear a long throw from their former player Ben Tozer and Ryan Broom’s cross from the right was headed in by Boyle.

Home goalkeeper Scott Flinders was called into action in the 37th minute, diving low to his left to save after Fraser Franks met Dan Butler’s corner with a firm header.

And Cheltenham doubled their advantage a minute before half-time. Chris Hussey cut in from the left and unleashed a low shot which was straight at Joe Day, but the goalkeeper fumbled it to Barnett, who pounced for his third goal in as many games.

Newport improved in the second period, but Demetriou failed to take advantage after he had been fouled in the box by Boyle, firing wide of the right post from the penalty spot.

Semenyo’s fine finish in the 89th minute finally beat Flinders but it proved too little, too late for the Exiles.
