Pep Guardiola's defending champions are setting a blistering pace in the Premier League and cruised past Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday.

But Liverpool remain just two points behind Guardiola's table toppers and along with City and Chelsea have yet to taste defeat this season.

And Reds defender Van Dijk insists Liverpool can match free-scoring City stride for stride.

"They are the champions and the best team in the league but we will try everything to be as good as we can," said the Dutch defender.

"Man City are not going to win every game 5-0 and are going to have tough games like everyone else.

"For us the challenge is to win or try to win every game that is ahead of us. The season is very long.

"We don't have to look at others. We want to look at the games we have and the next challenge we have is Watford away, which is going to be tough.

"We need to look at what we have ahead of us and that is more important than looking at someone else. It's the only way forward."

Additions like Xherdan Shaqiri have certainly strengthened Jurgen Klopp's hand.

The midfielder has made an eye-catching start to life at Anfield after joining from Stoke in the summer.

But the Swiss star has still yet to nail down a regular starting spot in Jurgen Klopp's side.

But Shaqiri, who scored his second goal for the club in Sunday's 2-0 win over Fulham, reckons he will only get better.

He said: "Of course I'm confident there are more goals to come.

"It's always better if you've got better players around you, if you can be more offensive, if you know that you are for sure going to have more possession than the opponent.

"But also you need to be ready to train hard every day. I'm feeling good, I'm fit, and I'm trying to give my best every time I get a chance."

Shaqiri spent three years at Stoke after a short spell with Inter Milan following his time at Bayern Munich.

But now he is back playing with some of the world's best attacking players alongside Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

He said: "I played in Bayern Munich with Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben so I knew already what it is like,

"It was nothing new for me. I knew already how good these very talented players were.

"It's different types of players because there are different coaches, they play a different type.

"But of course the intensity at the highest level, it's the same at Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

"When you want to be a top team, you have to be on the highest level to make your best performances. But to compare both teams is difficult."
