George Honeyman scores in opening minute as Sunderland see off Port Vale

First-half goals from George Honeyman and Lynden Gooch earned Sunderland a hard-fought 2-1 win at Port Vale in the FA Cup first round.

Sunderland were in front within 40 seconds at Vale Park as Honeyman profited from Chris Maguire’s lay-off to side-foot from the edge of the penalty area low into the bottom right-corner.

Gooch drove in a second for Jack Ross’ Black Cats after 19 minutes, turning on the 18-yard line to shoot low past goalkeeper Scott Brown.

Neil Aspin’s hosts were back in it after 35 minutes, with Tom Pope curling his shot beyond stopper Jon McLaughlin from inside the box after good work from substitute Manny Oyeleke.

After half-time, Vale pushed to level. Ben Whitfield hit the side-netting after a surging run from the right, while Honeyman drew a save from Brown at the other end.

Pope’s close-range effort was superbly thwarted by Reece James, as League One Sunderland survived a late scare in Staffordshire.
