Paul Doswell: Sutton lucky to still be in FA Cup

Sutton boss Paul Doswell admitted his side were extremely lucky to still be in the FA Cup after they were “battered” by a fired-up Slough at Gander Green Lane.

Visitors Slough came into the game as underdogs but were aiming to make it into the second round of the FA Cup for only the eighth time in their history – and they came so close to achieving their ambition.

They gave the home side a stern test and were unfortunate not to beat a Sutton side who have only lost three times this season.

Doswell said: “I think it’s fair to say they battered us. They were by far the better side. I think we only had two chances the whole game and we’re very lucky to still be in the competition.

“The real bit of good news is that we have another chance next Tuesday. The fact that I’m going to be turning my television on to BBC 2 at 7 o’clock is something that I didn’t think would happen for about 85 minutes watching that game.

“Tuesday night down at Slough is going to be a cracking atmosphere, a proper football night and that’s why all of us in this crazy game go from the highs to the lows, but today’s not a low for me because we’re not out of the cup.”

In the 74th minute, Mark Nisbet’s volley seemed destined for the net only to be headed off the line by Sutton skipper Jamie Collins.

The resulting ball hung in the air and with Matty Stevens ready to fire the Rebels ahead, he appeared to be dragged down, but the referee waved away Slough claims and a goal remained elusive.

Slough manager Neil Baker was not pleased with the decision, and said: “I think it was a nailed-on penalty, I’m still a bit shocked it wasn’t given.

“The fourth official and their bench agreed with us, but the referee didn’t give it. But we take it on the chin and look forward to the draw.

‘They didn’t create many chances, I think on the whole they’ll be the happier side that they’re still in it. We were a penalty away from being in the second round. I thought we grew into the game and looked the more likely to win.

“I’ll enjoy the draw and hope we draw one of the big boys.”
