Mansfield boss David Flitcroft hails first away win of the season

Mansfield manager David Flitcroft was delighted for the travelling fans after his side secured their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory at injury-hit Morecambe.

The decisive strike came in the 36th minute when an Otis Khan corner found its way to the midfielder on the edge of the Morecambe area to volley a 20-yard effort into the bottom-right corner.

Bishop’s match-winner earned the Stags their fourth win of the season and moved them up to 11th in the Sky Bet League Two table.

“It was a tough game but I think we deserved the win and I’m delighted for the lads and the fans,” Flitcroft said.

“We have been close to getting the win a few times and not seen games out but tonight we did that really well.

“We battled well and looked a real threat going forward and I think we were worthy of the three points for the way we played and the way we battled.

“This is a difficult place to come against a side who fight to the death.

“I was delighted with the three points but have asked the players where we could improve because we had chances to put them to the sword and didn’t take them.

“I would have liked us to have scored more because we had loads of one-on-ones but didn’t get the final ball right enough.

“Overall though, I have to be happy, especially as we kept a clean sheet as well to keep them out, especially in the first half when they played some good stuff.”

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley admitted he was frustrated after his side’s third successive home defeat.

He said: “It’s an amazingly tough time for us at the moment because nothing seems to be going our way.

“I have never known so many injuries and we are having to make all sorts of changes and we are just not getting any luck at all.

“Their goal from a corner that never was and that’s just the way things are going for us at the moment with so many critical decisions going against us.

“We played some really good stuff in the first half and we put some great balls into the box but just couldn’t get on the end of them and that hurt us. Although we huffed and puffed in the second half we didn’t really do enough to break them down.

“Again I can’t be too critical of the lads though because they continue to give their all and I’m proud of the lads and the fans for staying with us.

“At the end of the day we have to stay positive because one you feel sorry for yourself people are ready to trample all over you.”
