Lowe left frustrated after Bury are held to a point at Crewe

Ryan Lowe admitted his disappointment after Bury failed to secure a comeback win at Crewe despite carving out a string of second-half chances.
The Shakers roared back after the break after trailing to Charlie Kirk’s 37th-minute volley and levelled through Nicky Maynard against his former club, but Bury were denied by some super saves from Ben Garratt.
Maynard and Lowe are ex-Crewe strikers – Chris Dagnall was also up against his former club – and Lowe says he was happy to receive praise from his former team-mates, but wants his players to step up and become an even better side.
“I know most of the Crewe lads and they said ‘wow’ after that, but we keep getting told that we are a good team, but I want us to be an excellent team,” said the Bury manager.
“I am disappointed that we haven’t come away with a win. We created a lot of chances in the second half and their keeper has pulled off a couple of good saves.
“The first half probably cost us as if we come in at 0-0 at half-time then we go on and win that game. We were a lot better in the second and the football we play is a credit to the players and staff, but I want more – I want the ball in the net three or four times.”
But Garratt stood between Bury and victory, keeping out headers from Chris Stokes and Adam Thompson and a rising drive from Maynard which looked bound for the top corner.
The striker netted his third goal in four games since signing a short-term deal at Gigg Lane when he levelled nine minutes after the interval, finishing off from close range after a surging run from Callum McFadzean.
Crewe had led when veteran defender Nicky Hunt picked out Kirk on the far side of the box and the youngster lashed a volley into the bottom corner.
But so dominant were Bury after the break they would have gone under had it not been for the form of Garratt and skipper George Ray at the back.
Crewe boss Dave Artell admitted: “It was one of the worst performances of the season. We weren’t very good. Sometimes you don’t get what you deserve in football – last week we didn’t when we lost at Lincoln, this week we didn’t deserve a point.
“I could smell an apathy before the game and I told the players at half-time that they were leading but not playing very well. I’m not sure whether it’s mental but I think there is an acceptance that as ‘long as he’s an eight out of 10, I just need to be a six out of 10’.
“There’s a reliance on others, but we’re not Man City and we’re not going to walk the league.”
