Karl Robinson: It’s frustrating, because I know how good I can be at my job

Oxford boss Karl Robinson defended his role in the team’s poor start to the League One season after their latest loss.

Morgan Ferrier and Zeli Ismail scored to earn Walsall a 2-1 away victory, leaving the U’s second bottom and with just one win and five points from their nine league games.

Robinson, whose side pulled a late goal back through James Henry, bemoaned the injury crisis that leaves him without nine first-team players – but felt his patched-up side should have earned something from the game.

He said: “The performance was certainly there against a team in the top six. We were better than them, but the result says you’re not and that is the only thing that matters.

“The results are not good enough.

“It’s frustrating, because I know how good I can be at my job.

“The time and effort my staff put in, they’re not getting the rewards on the pitch and how many times can you keep taking that?

“When you care for the players and the club, it hurts equally as much.

“I was just sat in the dressing room and I can rattle off names who are as good as anyone in this league and they’re sat in tracksuits.”

Robinson thought his side should have been awarded a late penalty but substitute Rob Dickie was instead penalised for a foul on Walsall’s Jack Fitzwater.

He said: “We can speak about the penalty and I honestly don’t know what we’ve got to do to get a penalty.”

Walsall boss Dean Keates was delighted with his side’s response to seeing their unbeaten start to the campaign end at the hands of Doncaster last weekend.

The Saddlers could have won by a greater margin, with Ferrier twice hitting the crossbar, but Keates was thrilled with the performance as his side extended their unbeaten away run to five games.

He said: “We’re delighted. I asked for a reaction from last weekend and the lads had a good week training, we’ve done well and we deserved it.

“There’s no questioning the work rate.

“As I said the day I got the job, what I will give the football club is everything and the team will be an extension of myself.

“I ask them to go out there and enjoy their football.

“They do the defensive side, but when we’ve got the ball go out and play and express yourself and I feel we did that today.”
