David Wagner laments ‘big mistakes’ as Huddersfield fall to defeat at Leicester

David Wagner felt the mistakes made by Huddersfield were the only difference between the teams after the Terriers were beaten 3-1 at Leicester.

The Town boss saw his side squander an early lead at the King Power Stadium to leave Huddersfield without a victory and bottom of the Premier League table.

Mathias Jorgensen put the visitors in front early on with only their third goal of the campaign but Kelechi Iheanacho quickly equalised, marking his recall to the team with a goal.

Second-half goals from James Maddison and Jamie Vardy sealed all three points for Leicester, who returned to winning ways following successive defeats.

“It was very disappointing as I felt there was something in the game for us but we made so many big mistakes, it was easy for them,” said Wagner.

“Every goal we conceded was a present for them. To concede counter-attack goals against Leicester makes no sense.

“There were so many big mistakes it made it difficult to win the game. But away from that we created some chances and the football we played was good. Apart from the mistakes the performance was there, the attitude was good.

“We made it difficult for ourselves to get something but away from those mistakes we played a good game.”

Poor starts to matches has been something of a theme for Leicester this season and it proved the case again on Saturday afternoon.

Foxes boss Claude Puel was pleased with the response from his players but he wants his team to start making life easier for themselves from the first whistle.

“It was a bad start and often we have difficulties at the start of our games, which makes it difficult to come back in the game, especially against a team with a strong defensive unit who then defend deep,” said Puel.

“It was difficult to find space with all their players behind the ball, it makes it complicated.

“But I am happy with our desire and our mentality and strength to come back but of course I would like us to prevent this happening from the start as it is difficult to correct the situation because maybe in the next game we will not be able to come back.

“We have quality on the pitch but there was not enough from us, we need to improve our mentality from the start. (In the) second half we had more intensity and a good attitude and more conviction.”
