Brentford win caps perfect week, says Derby boss Lampard

Derby manager Frank Lampard celebrated the birth of his daughter with a rousing 3-1 victory over Brentford which took his side back into the play-off positions in the Sky Bet Championship.

Harry Wilson, David Nugent and Mason Mount scored the goals as the Rams brushed aside fellow promotion contenders Brentford, who had taken the lead in the first minute through Henrik Dalsgaard.

Lampard, whose side face his former manager Jose Mourinho and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup in midweek, also has the congratulations of the Portuguese still ringing in his ears.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder, whose wife Christine gave birth to his third daughter this week, said: “On a personal note at home and today in the workplace it’s a nice way to finish.

“The weekend’s not over but so far it has been a nice weekend/week for me.

“I’m delighted with today because however happy you are at home, and that is nice, when you come to work you want to perform and it’s the lads out there who performed and I thought the lads were great.”

Lampard revealed Manchester United manager Mourinho had been one of the first to congratulate him.

Lampard, who played under Mourinho at Chelsea, said : “We’ve spoken in the last 24 hours, he congratulated me on the birth of my daughter. We did not talk tactics.

“I learnt a lot from him and he was supportive for me becoming a manager and I appreciate it.”

Lampard was particularly pleased with the way his side reacted to conceding so early in the game.

He said:  “To react like that, the crowd and the players, they were sensational in the first half.”

Lampard praised on-loan midfielder Wilson who had a big impact on the game, scoring Derby’s first goal after being sidelined by injury.

Lampard said: “He’s been injured, played two games. We’ve gone with him today and I thought he looked great

“He is like me, he is so hungry. I like that about him.”

Brentford took a shock lead in the first minute when Dalsgaard escaped the attentions of Fikayo Tomori to meet Mohamed Benrahma’s corner with a header which went in off the underside of the bar.

But Derby hit back to lead 3-1 by the break as first Wilson topped off a flowing move with a calm finish.

Nugent calmly lobbed over Daniel Bentley for the second after running on to a chipped pass by Bradley Johnson.

On-loan Chelsea midfielder Mount curled the ball over the wall and wide of Bentley’s despairing dive low to his right for the third.

Oliver Watkins forced Scott Carson into a regulation save before the break as Brentford tried to get back into the game but rarely threatened after that.

Brentford manager Dean Smith admitted his side disappointed him with their defending after making a perfect start with the early goal.

He said: “It was a really good start but the manner of the goals we conceded disappointed me. But I don’t want to take any credit away from Derby.

“In the second half I thought we controlled the ball.

“I can look back at changing the back four but when they score with a break from our corner is it a selection problem?

“The manner of the goals disappointed me. The second was a ball over the top and the third was a pathetic decision to give the free-kick.”
