Steve Evans praises Peterborough’s performance as Posh return to the top

Peterborough manager Steve Evans was left gushing over the quality his side produced in coming from behind in their 4-2 victory at Gillingham.
The Posh made it 17 goals in five away League One games this season and went back to the top of the table.
After Posh surrendered a one-goal lead, Siriki Dembele equalised before Ivan Toney gave them the lead with a strike Evans called “the best goal my team has ever scored”.
The Posh boss said: “I thought the quality of the football at times was outstanding.
“We had to show a different side of our game at times but our passing and movement was great.
“We said back in the summer this might not be the best-ever Posh team but in terms of character it is up there with the best.
“We equalised and then I think I have just seen the best goal my team has ever scored.
“There were five or six one or two touch passes right through the team and then Toney bends it in. It was stunning.
“We have come to a tough venue historically for us. It was a good test for us today.
“To get promoted, and we are long away from that, as a minimum you have to have fight and determination.
“You either buckle or you show some character and we showed that all over the pitch.”
Peterborough went ahead after 24 minutes when Jamie Walker slid in Jason Naismith’s cross, but Callum Reilly’s half-volley equalised for Gillingham five minutes into the second half.
The Gills were quickly in front through Mark Byrne’s fizzing low drive, only for Dembele to level matters before the hour mark.
Toney then provided the stand-out moment with a wonderful curler into the top corner before Callum Cooke finally settled the match late on.
Gillingham are left in the relegation zone after their seventh match without a win.
Gills manager Steve Lovell said: “When you’re out there things happen very quickly and their second goal sort of kick-started them again.
“Talking to Steve Evans at the end of the game, he said, ‘I thought you had us’ and fair play to him by saying that.
“He could see their relief when they got their second goal and it gave them the little kick-start that they needed.
“For their last two goals, we’ve had possession in good areas at the other end of the pitch and it ends up in the back of our net, albeit the third goal from Toney was a tremendous finish.
“That’s why he’s cost so much money and it was a quality finish, a great goal.
“I think a couple of individuals they had were the difference today.
“I thought they were a decent side, but for most of the game we dealt with it, it was just that their goals were quality.”
