Dino Maamria delighted with clean sheet as Stevenage edge Grimsby

Stevenage manager Dino Maamria was delighted with his side’s performance as Steve Seddon’s late winner proved enough to beat lowly Grimsby.

Seddon’s late goal extended Stevenage’s unbeaten run to three games as they closed in on the top six in League Two with a 1-0 home victory.

The result sees Grimsby’s run without a goal move past the 500-minute mark as they hover just above the relegation zone.

Maamria said: “It’s a good clean sheet and a good three points for us against a difficult team, they are all difficult teams.

“They are fighting for their lives, they’ve got a manager fighting for his job, they’ve got players fighting for their lives.

“They came in with a 4-5-1 and they tried to make it difficult for us.

“They were playing for the point, you could see that, it was frustrating at times but we kept at it and that’s what you’ve got to do.

“We stuck to the game plan and we opened them up in the 83rd minute and it was a great goal from the full-back.

“They did the right thing really, coming here after four defeats in a row, trying to scrape a point. It was frustrating but they had a job to do.”

Boro’s Emmanuel Sonupe came closest to breaking the deadlock before the break with James McKeown getting down well to keep him out.

Danny Newton then fired wide as the hosts continued to carve out chances.

After the restart Luther Wildin flicked the visitors’ bar with a powerful strike, with gutsy Grimsby defending keeping the hosts out for the majority. But Seddon spared the hosts’ frustrations late on with an easy finish after Newton’s surging run.

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley felt there were positives despite the defeat.

He said: “I thought in contrast to the last two games, we fought, we ran, we stayed in the game.

“We had some chances to score that first goal which has been eluding us in games.

“I think certainly in terms of the last two games, it was an improvement in the level of performance.

“I think we were competitive and in the first half we had some situations where we could have created and scored.

“Certainly in the second half – going into the business end of the game – we were right in it.

“Once again, we’re disappointed to lose, but I saw improvements from the last two games.

“We wanted to try and win the game, we’re conscious of the fact we haven’t given our supporters a victory for some time, and we haven’t scored a goal for some time.

“When things are going against you it’s pretty frustrating.”
