Aaron Ramsey's new Arsenal deal 'not far away' – Charles Watts

According to Football.London correspondent Charles Watts, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is inching closer to signing a new deal with the club.

Ramsey's decade at Arsenal

Welsh midfielder Ramsey has been on the books of Arsenal for 10 years now.

He made the move to the Emirates from Cardiff back in 2008, for a fee of around £5 million.

And, despite having spent a number of lengthy spells sidelined with long-term injuries, Ramsey has nevertheless gone on to establish himself as one of the Gunners' most important players.

The flair and goalscoring ability brought to the table by the midfielder have long-proven crucial to Arsenal's fortunes.

In fact, Ramsey bagged the all-important winning goal in the FA Cup Final in both 2014 and 2017.

All told, the Welsh international has racked up 58 goals in over 300 appearances in an Arsenal jersey.

Ramsey's contract standoff

However, despite his importance to the Gunners, the board at the Emirates have, to this point, been unable to tie Ramsey down to a new deal at the club.

The Cardiff youth product's current deal is set to expire next summer.

As such, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United having been named as admirers of Ramsey's talents this summer, Arsenal are said to be genuinely concerned by the possibility of losing their midfield star to a direct rival on a free transfer in a year's time.

'Moving in the right direction'

New Gunners' boss Unai Emery has already made it clear that he hopes to see Ramsey put pen to paper on a new deal at the Emirates, but, to this point, despite suggestions of an announcement being imminent, no confirmation has yet been forthcoming.

However, the recent hush surrounding the 27-year-old's contract talks should be no reason for concern, according to one individual.

Speaking at a live Q&A event yesterday, Football.London reporter Charles Watts discussed the negotiations between Arsenal and Ramsey, with Watts having revealed that a trusted source ensured him last week that an agreement over a new deal is 'not far away':

'In terms of Ramsey, there is still no agreement. But I did hear from someone I trust last week that things were moving in the right direction and that he thought a new deal was not far away – which is a positive.'

Watts added:

'I think he will eventually sign. But Arsenal really have given themselves big issues by letting themselves get into this position again.'
