Why Jose Mourinho will never blame Paul Pogba for Man Utd penalty miss

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he places no blame on Paul Pogba for his penalty miss against Burnley.

The Red Devils turned around their brief slump on Sunday, beating Burnley 2-0 for their second win of the season, with both goals coming in the first half.

Pogba squandered the chance to increase United's lead after half-time after seeing his penalty saved by Joe Hart.

Mourinho refused to criticise the midfielder for his miss, instead praising Pogba for having the courage to step up and take the spot kick.

"I never blame a player for missing penalties," he said after the match (via Goal).

"I blame the ones who refuse to go up there. Paul's scored some good ones for us."

Mourinho did, however, lay into forward substitute Marcus Rashford who was sent off just 10 minutes after coming on in the second half for pushing his head into Phil Bardsley in retaliation to a kick from the former United man.

"I don't know what happened," he added. "I would say it was naive. It was a kid and a very experienced man. Bardsley's been in the game for 20 years and Marcus is a naive boy."

The win sees United go into the first international break of the season placed 10th in the Premier League on six points and six behind leaders Liverpool.

United face Watford in their next Premier League game, before kicking off their Champions League campaign against BSC Young Boys.
