Dean Austin frustrated after Northampton draw with Tranmere

Northampton manager Dean Austin rued another two points that slipped through his side’s grasp after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tranmere.

The Cobblers were the dominant team for long spells but James Norwood’s sixth goal of the season handed Rovers the lead before Junior Morias levelled on the hour mark.

The hosts then pushed for the winner and had enough chances to take all three points but poor finishing left Austin frustrated at full-time.

“Frustrating is the word,” he said. “We did enough to win the game – again – but you’ve got to take your chances.

“I didn’t think we were as good as we have been at home this season but we had the chances to win the game.

“We didn’t work the goalkeeper enough but we got into the right areas so you’ve just got to keep believing that it’s going to click at some point.

“We just need that bit of luck, we need to be more ruthless and we have to show more composure at times, but in terms of what we’re doing, I’m more than happy.

“On the positive side, we haven’t lost. Last season we would have games at home where we’d have one shot and lose so we’re doing a lot right and I’m very upbeat and very positive.

“I do honestly believe that it’s a matter of time before we click into gear because there’s not too much wrong but we’ve got to find a way and find the magic formula. On the whole I feel positive.”

Rovers boss Micky Mellon was satisfied with the point as his side’s steady start back in the Football League continued.

He said: “We’ve picked up a good point at a difficult place. We knew it’d be tough but the boys battled away and we’re a team that’s constantly developing.

“There are things we need to get better at and there are things we could have done better but, in terms of character and fight, to come to Northampton and get a draw is pleasing.

“We’re coming into a new level and we’re facing new challenges all the time so the players have had a right good go and we know there are things we’ll have to work on.

“It’s disappointing to go a goal up and concede in the way we did. We missed a tackle which you have to win in that position and they then get down the side of us and we don’t stop the cross.

“These are the lessons you have to learn because they have dangerous players and the chances are they’ll pick someone out, which they did, and the lad put it away.

“I don’t think you’re ever happy with a point but we’ll respect every point we get on the road this season.”
