Jamie Carragher: Victor Lindelof is not good enough for Man Utd

Jamie Carragher has offered a brutal assessment of Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof after the club suffered a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Lindelof, 24, entered the fray after Phil Jones was forced off through injury with the Red Devils already 2-0 down, but he failed to make a significant impact as Lucas Moura raced through on goal and put the north London club three to the good in the dying embers of the match.

The Swede has so far failed to justify his price tag since moving from Benfica last summer, having featured sporadically during his maiden campaign on English soil last term.

Former Liverpool centre-back Carragher has now offered a scathing assessment of the defender, revealing he feels sorry for him because he is not Premier League quality.

However, Lindelof was not the only player subject to criticism, as defensive duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were also within Carragher's crosshairs as he condemned the performances of all three players.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Carragher said: "That's a team that still looks like it needs another £200m spent on it.

"What has happened at Man Utd in terms of buying two £30m+ centre-backs? I mean Victor Lindelof, I can't criticise Lindelof because it gets to the stage where I just think he is out of his depth, I actually feel a little bit sorry for him, he should not be playing at this level.

"But in Jones and Smalling, have they improved since Mourinho has come in? They are England internationals, but they're not good enough for Manchester United.

"They have been playing for Man Utd for a long time now and it shouldn't really be happening."

Lindelof endured a torrid time last weekend as the Red Deviles suffered a 3-2 defeat to Brighton, and having been dropped for this evening's fixture, it is looking increasingly unlikely that the defender will feature against Burnley given his recent form.
