Way urges Yeovil to maintain high standards after seeing off Stevenage

Yeovil Town boss Darren Way urged his team to maintain their high standards after they ruthlessly dismissed a below-par Stevenage with a 2-0 win.

The visitors arrived at Huish Park boasting an unbeaten record and flying high in League Two but proved no match for the Glovers.

First-half goals from Alex Fisher and Sessi D’Almeida clinched three points for the hosts and Stevenage’s misery was complete when Michael Timlin was sent off with three minutes left.

Way said: “It was a fantastic performance. There was never a spell in that game where I felt we relinquished control. We dictated it from start to finish.

“We looked a real threat going forward and both of our goals were excellent moves with fine finishes.

“We’ve got some good players in our team who pose a threat to opposition defences and they are finding some consistency now.

“Stevenage made a substitution and changed their shape in the first half in recognition of our dominance and that says a lot.

“In the second half they really went for it and had three men forward but then it was the turn of our defence to stay solid.

“We showed huge resilience to keep another clean sheet and we need to keep this momentum going now because we have reached the required standard and need to maintain it.”

Stevenage made a slow start to the game and boss Dino Maamria pointed to a punishing schedule of trips to Forest Green and Yeovil inside four days.

After selecting an unchanged team, he said: “I need to take some responsibility because we looked lethargic in the first half and looked like we had been on a seven-hour journey on Friday and a six-hour journey on Tuesday night.

“That’s how we looked and I know better now. I will learn and will probably make changes the next time we have back-to-back away games like this.

“We’ve got it again next month when we have Carlisle on a Saturday followed by Exeter on a Tuesday and I’m not sure how the league come up with these runs of fixtures.

“That’s how it is though and we have to adapt to it and I have to use my squad to cope with things like that.

“I did make changes and we dominated the second half after I did that and I’m not sure how we didn’t score any goals because we created so many chances.”
