Barcelona tighten their core

Any change to the midfield seems highly unlikely

Barcelona tighten their core

When Arturo Vidal was presented as a Barcelona player a few weeks ago, the Catalonian side looked like it had finally created a tight midfield.

However, the question still remains as to which player, if any, will hold the responsibility of playing in former captain, Andres Iniesta's central midfield role.

He was a one of a kind magician in his position and after his departure, it is unknown whether the club will continue looking for a player that is a warrior or to someone with a better ability to control the strings in the midfield.

At first, those at the club couldn't agree on who would obtain that honour.

Some had the opinion that the Chilean covered the departure of Paulinho while Arthur Melo and Philippe Coutinho would together control the core.

Using this argument, Barcelona had no reason to engage in addition purchases or transfers.

Meanwhile, others still left the door open to the arrival of another player with the means to raise the bar and argued to use Arthur and Coutinho elsewhere.

A few weeks later, when two official matches have already been played and with the transfer window closing shortly, the possibility of signing another central midfielder is slim.

Only a radical turn of events would signal a change.

One possible case would be if Ivan Rakitic ended up moving to Paris Saint-Germain.

This move would suggest that the club would need to quickly bring in one of the three players they have been rumoured to sign this summer.

We are talking about Adrien Rabiot, Frenkie De Jong or Paul Pogba.

Both Rabiot and De Jong would be difficult to sign, after playing superbly well with their club ad hinting at contract extensions.

Barcelona also have a very low chance of signing Manchester United's Pogba because he simply costs too much.

One or two current players would have to leave in order to generate enough funds for the Frenchman.

Left-back and Rafinha

This midfield complication leaves this particular summer transfer window closed for the LaLiga Santander title holders.

In fact, right now it is a better option to sign a player of lesser status who could release Sergi Roberto and cover Jordi Alba.

On the other hand, the difficulty to sign another midfield maestro gives more opportunity for Rafinha Alcantara, whose exit to Real Betis has been complicated by the refusal of Barcelona to loan again.
