Phil Brown believes Swindon were the better team in cup defeat to Forest Green

Swindon manager Phil Brown claimed the best team lost after Swindon suffered a 1-0 Carabao Cup first-round defeat to Forest Green.

Tahvon Campbell scored the only goal after an hour to fire Forest Green into round two for the first time in their history.

Swindon were made to pay the price for a string of missed chances and Brown said: “We have had nine shots on target, they have had one on target and beaten us 1-0.

“I would not class that as going wrong, I would have said we were very, very unfortunate tonight and were, without a shadow of a doubt, the best team by a long way.”

Campbell grabbed the all-important goal after robbing Swindon defender Olly Lancashire and slotting neatly past goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Brown claimed it should have been ruled out for a foul on Lancashire.

The former Hull boss said: “We have been unhinged again by an official that has not seen an elbow on my centre-half.

“Olly Lancashire has put his head in, got an elbow in his face, my young centre-half has panicked and the ball has gone in the back of our net.”

Campbell’s strike came against the run of play as Swindon dominated for much of the match.

Martin Smith hit the post from inside his own half before Keshi Anderson tested Forest Green goalkeeper James Montgomery with a close-range header.

Montgomery also saved well from midfielder Michael Doughty while Haydn Hollis’ long-range effort over the bar was as close as the visitors came to a second goal.

It was a satisfactory return to the County Ground for Forest Green manager Mark Cooper, who admitted his side were lucky not to be behind at half-time.

Cooper, who changed all but four of his starting XI, said: “I think when you change seven players from a team that’s playing well you lose a bit of rhythm and a bit of fluidity.

“Swindon chose to play the majority of their first team, and we deserved to be losing at half-time, I am not going to beat around the bush about that.

“Swindon had a couple of really good chances and our goalkeeper made a couple of good saves and we were lucky to be in the game at half-time.

“We were a lot better in the second half and we looked a threat in the second half.”
