Mansfield boss David Flitcroft delighted to end Accrington hoodoo

Mansfield manager David Flitcroft was delighted to see his Sky Bet League Two side put bogey side Accrington Stanley to the sword in a 6-1 Carabao Cup demolition.

The Stags had not beaten Stanley in 13 previous outings – dating back to November 2006 – but a first-half Tyler Walker hat-trick led the way for Flitcroft’s side.

“We were very good tonight. I have unbelievable admiration for Accrington Stanley and the work done there,” the Mansfield boss said.

“They are a good team. But we have taken on a League One team tonight and at times put them to the sword. Some of the football was outstanding.

“Hopefully the supporters who came tonight will spread the message that the wind is changing a bit at the One Call.

“I want to give our supporters a team that represents the town and give them football they’ve not seen for a long time.”

After Sam Finley’s neat turn and accurate finish from a tight angle on six minutes put Stanley ahead, Walker won and netted two penalties in four minutes before completing his treble in first-half stoppage-time.

“The kid (Walker) is pure class. You can see from his upbringing, his dad, he has been honest with him and he is not like an academy player. He is robust and gets up and gets on with it. I love working with the kid.”

Walker was fouled by goalkeeper Jonny Maxted for the first penalty after nine minutes, and brought down by Scott Brown on the byline for the second spot-kick, coolly slotting home both.

Three minutes later Calum Butcher set up Otis Khan on a breakaway for a blistering third and when Walker flicked in Khan’s low cross at the near post for the fourth, the tie was all but over.

Transfer-listed striker Danny Rose came on after 65 minutes and finished a low CJ Hamilton cross inside a minute of his introduction before Jacob Mellis teed up Hamilton for a powerful finish for the sixth late on.

Stanley boss John Coleman had no arguments with the result.

“We are a bit shellshocked but I can’t take anything away from Mansfield,” he said.

“They flew out the traps. We knew they couldn’t keep it up but they managed to score three goals in that 15-minute spell and it was just reward for the way they played.

“All I can do is congratulate Mansfield and hope they do well in the next round.

“I feel sorry for our fans as no one wants to see the team beaten that heavily. But the one thing I can be proud of is the way we stuck to our guns. We ran ourselves into the ground in the later stages and didn’t give up.

“We just have to give Mansfield a bit of credit. It would have been a good pay day for us if we’d got could have got through to the next round, but our main priority is the league.”
