Collins praises players despite defeat in Carabao Cup shootout

Bradford boss Michael Collins praised his side’s performance despite being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Macclesfield.
A goal from debutant Luca Colville levelled the scores in the second half, cancelling out a goal from Fiacre Kelleher but despite losing the resulting penalty shootout Collins said he was “pleased” with the performance.
“I’m quite pleased with the performance,” said Collins.
“I thought we asked different things of the lads tonight, I thought we dominated for large spells and created chances, it’s just one of those nights. When you strip it down you score the most difficult chance of the night, it’s a 30-yard strike from Luca.
“There’s got to be a control to our game. I’ve had a look at the stats and I think we’ve had 10 shots on target so things we’ve said after the last game we’ve improved on but we’ve got to win football matches. At the end of the day we’ve not done that but the performance gives me a lot of things to be proud of.
“We’ll dust ourselves down, take it on the chin, go down to Southend feeling confident and take the positives. It’s a disappointed dressing room in there.”
Macclesfield manager Mark Yates thought his side dramatically improved their form after back-to-back defeats against Swindon and Grimsby.
“That’s how I want my team to play,” said the former Solihull Moors and Cheltenham boss.
“We stepped up a level from last year and we know we’ve got good players and I think it’ll take a little bit of time to adjust but that’s what I want from my team. We were organised, we were solid. The keepers made a good couple of saves.
“But I thought the energy and the aggression we played at was brilliant. Saturday wasn’t what we wanted but today was much better.
“As stupid as it sounds we could be on six points but we’re learning quickly. The lads are learning what I want from them and they’re a decent side, but we played really well today.
“There was more everything today. You couldn’t fault the effort tonight and we had that aggression. We asked questions and with a bit of luck I think we’ve edged a really competitive game of football.”
