Pep Guardiola wants Raheem Sterling to sign contract extension

Raheem Sterling is currently entering the final two years of his contract and Manchester City are keen to tie down the winger to a longer deal.

'We are delighted with him and would like Raheem to stay'
However, negotiations between Sterling and the club over a new contract seem to have been going on for some time now.

Despite this, Pep Guardiola is still very hopeful that Sterling will put pen to paper on a new deal.

"For the record, I'm not a sports director, not even a manager,

"I'm a trainer. I try to make a good team spirit in the locker room and win games.

"But we are delighted with him and would like Raheem to stay. We'll do our effort to make him feel we count on him. And we count on him.

"We arrived after a difficult season [two years ago] and I told him I want to help him and would like him to be happy.

"In the end, the agents may not have agreements and that may not happen. But he knows and his agent knows we like him and want him a lot."

Guardiola also commented upon Sterling's 2018 World Cup performance, during which Sterling had been heavily criticised by certain sections of the English media.

"If you judge the players in the World Cup if they score a goal or not…Raheem had this special relationship with English football, but he's so loved in the locker room.

"He made some very good things in the World Cup, how he moved and created space for others. He likes to score goals and he tried, but I'm sure in the European qualifiers he will score goals for his country, England."

Super season
Manchester City smashed the Premier League last season. They finished with 100 points from 38 games and broke numerous records.

One player who was particularly impressive for City in their title-winning season was Raheem Sterling.

Prior to the 2017/18 season Sterling had always been a decent winger. But he had never managed to add enough goals and assists to his game to make him world-class.

However, in the 2017/18 season, Sterling proved he is one of the best wingers in the Premier League.

In 33 Premier League games for City, last season Sterling scored 18 and assisted 15, a simply ridiculous record for a winger.

Sterling even scored more than players such as Romelu Lukaku, Roberto Firmino, Alexandre Lacazette and Gabriel Jesus.

Sterling's 2018/19 season also got off to a solid start vs Arsenal as he scored City's first goal of the campaign in a 2-0 win.
