Steve Evans delighted with Peterborough’s attacking threat

Peterborough boss Steve Evans insisted his side were much the better team after coming from a goal down to win 4-1 at Rochdale.
Ian Henderson netted a 17th-minute penalty, after a foul on Joe Rafferty by Colin Daniel, to hand the home side the lead.
However, it was one-way traffic as Posh took control with Jason Cummings equalising in the 25th minute and Mark O’Hara and Matt Godden adding further goals before the break.
O’Hara slotted home a fourth in stoppage-time to wrap up a comfortable victory.
“We’d worked really hard on the training ground to combat Rochdale’s shape because it’s a difficult shape to play against, so I wasn’t happy with our first 15 minutes,” Evans said.
“But suddenly a great cross from Dembele and good header from Cummings and suddenly we were in the game and there was confidence and players were playing as they have been doing on the training ground.
“I thought we were the much better side thereafter, all over the pitch, we won the battles and had to stand up to some aerial balls into our box and some good football from Rochdale as well.
“But with some of the brilliant attacking play we deployed, we really could have scored seven or eight here.
“It’s a tough place to come and we’d have been happy with a 1-0 win at Rochdale, let alone a 4-1 win.”
Winger Siriki Dembele was the inspirational during Posh’s comeback, setting up Cummings’ equaliser and his free-kick led to O’Hara heading Peteterborough in front.
Dembele’s free-kick in first-half stoppage-time also saw Dale goalkeeper Josh Lillis parry the ball into Godden’s path to tap in from close range.
After the break Dale were frustrated by Peterborough’s well-organised defence.
Posh were always a threat on the counter-attack and Dembele almost scored the goal his display deserved, but his 25-yard striker flew just over the crossbar.
O’Hara’s second goal of the afternoon added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage-time, but Dale boss Keith Hill was upbeat despite the loss.
“There’s always disappointment in defeat but I am reasonably happy with the performance,” he said.
“I go back to when I was a player and a former manager of mine said ‘we’re playing all the football, they are scoring all the goals.’
“We forgot one key component of any football match – defending. Individual mistakes, and to be fair, if you give those opportunities to Peterborough’s strikers or offensive midfield players then you will get punished.
“So we cannot be as charitable as we were today. But with respect to how I want to play with the play and regaining possession, certain parts of the game were better than our opening day win at Burton.
“But overall, the game was awash with individual defensive mistakes and that’s what has cost us.”
