Dino Maamria hails inspirational Alex Revell after late win for Stevenage

Stevenage boss Dino Maamria described veteran striker Alex Revell as an inspiration after his two late goals gave Boro their first win of the season.

After Crawley striker Ollie Palmer had cancelled out a 48th-minute opener from substitute Alex Reid, Revell settled the issue in dramatic fashion to earn Stevenage a 3-1 victory.

The 35-year-old, who has played for 14 clubs, rose to give Boro the lead two minutes from time before racing through on a pass by James Ferry to seal victory.

“As a team we were fantastic and what can you say about Alex Revell? He works his socks off,” said Maamria.

“He was an inspiration. At 1-1 it could have gone either way but Revell is there to produce, score goals and the fans love him.”

Stevenage opened their season with a 2-2 home draw against Tranmere, after going two goals ahead, and Maamria felt his side expressed themselves well with the ball in the second half.

The Tunisian added: “We scored three good goals and could have scored more.

“Everybody has a role to play and our substitutes made a positive contribution.

“I was disappointed with the goal we conceded. Our defence is a work in progress and we have a lot of work to do.”

Crawley had opened the season with a 1-0 victory at Cheltenham and head coach Harry Kewell felt that “an off day” could have been behind the Stevenage defeat.

The former Champions League winner admitted: “We weren’t at the races and Stevenage play a very direct game.

“Our quality in the final third was not good enough and we were a bit leggy.

“Maybe it was one of those off days. We needed that bit of ruthlessness.”

Former Leeds and Liverpool star Kewell felt referee Peter Wright, taking charge of his first league game, made errors in Boro’s first and third goals.

“I’m all for young guys doing it but we had the same last week,” added Kewell. “The third goal was three yards offside.”

The Australian is confident his men will bounce back quickly and said: “Our players are heading in the right direction. We want to win every game.

“Unfortunately, in this game, we were not at it. We know what Stevenage do – they work hard, knock long balls up and get on the end of them.”
