Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze has admitted he was interested in a move to the Premier League, with rejoining former manager Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool once a distinct possibility.

Across two tenures at Dortmund, the World Cup-winning goalscorer has made 164 appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals and providing 53 assists.

When Gotze decided that his time at Bayern Munich – the club he played for in between his Dortmund stints – was up, the German has admitted that his former manager Klopp was interested in taking him to the Premier League with his then new side Liverpool.

Speaking during the DAZN documentary 'Being Mario Gotze' (via the Sport Review), he said: "I decided to leave Bayern and Jurgen Klopp was interested in getting me to Liverpool. And I was also interested in working with him again.

"It's still existing. He is a world-class coach and that's why it's always an option. I decided to join Borussia Dortmund, but it was not a decision against Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp. But on the contrary."

Having struggled with a metabolic illness, Gotze has struggled to recapture the form that saw him help lead Germany to a World Cup triumph back in 2014.

Just four years later, the 26-year-old was not included in Germany manager Joachim Low squad to travel to Russia for this month's tournament.

This season, Gotze made just 23 Bundesliga appearances which ultimately set him back from reclaiming a place in the Germany squad.
