Brazil ready for pressure of World Cup ahead of final warm-up clash – Marcelo

Defender Marcelo is aware of the pressure on Brazil’s players to deliver World Cup success as they prepare for the tournament with a friendly against Austria.

Tite’s side head to Russia as one of the favourites but with the 7-1 semi-final thrashing at the hands of Germany in the 2014 tournament in their own country still hanging over them.

With players like Neymar, Philippe Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus, five-time winners Brazil boast some of the biggest names to be involved this summer.

Final preparations will be made in a friendly in Vienna, with Marcelo unconcerned by the weight of expectation on the team.

“What happened at the 2014 World Cup was horrible,” he said. “It is clear that all Brazilians were sad with what happened (against Germany) but we have to move on.

“The World Cup hasn’t started yet but we have a new opportunity now, to show we are competitive and can fight for the title.

“We know the pressure we have on us and we are used to it.”

Austria may not have qualified for the World Cup but have beaten hosts Russia and holders Germany in their last two friendlies.

A 1-0 victory over Russia was topped with the 2-1 success over one of the tournament favourites as Alessandro Schopf scored the winning goal in Klagenfurt.

Beating Brazil would be a superb hat-trick of results to wrap up the season for Franco Foda’s side and skipper Julian Baumgartlinger insists Austria will be full of confidence heading into the match.

“We know exactly what to expect tomorrow,” he told reporters on the eve of the clash.

“An opponent with enormous individual quality, where it makes no difference which player is on the field.

“But we can still – after the games against Russia and Germany – appear with confidence. It’s something special to let the whole season end. It’s just fun, just like the last two games before.”
