Calls to cancel the World Cup after Nicklas Bendtner left out of Denmark’s 23-man squad

Former Arsenal striker and cult hero Nicklas Bendtner has been left out of Denmark's 23-man squad for the World Cup.

The 30-year-old had been included in the initial 35-man provisional roster named by Denmark coach Age Hareide for the tournament.

But his involvement had been in doubt following a groin injury he picked up while playing for current club side Rosenborg before joining up with the Denmark team.

And now, after missing Denmark's 0-0 draw with Sweden on Saturday, the striker has not made the cut for the Danes travelling to Russia.

In losing Bendtner, Denmark will be without one of their best active scorers, with the striker having scored 30 goals for his country - more than any other available for selection. Though his tally is still some way off the record 52 set by Poul Nielsen and Jon Dahl Tomasson.
