Potential new Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri praised by Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed Maurizio Sarri as "one of the absolute best" amid reports linking him to Chelsea.

Despite no official announcements being made regarding the future of Antonio Conte, the Italian is largely expected to leave Chelsea with Sarri replacing him.

The club are said to be unhappy with Conte's criticism of the board, as well as dissatisfaction with the Blues' poor Premier League title defence, despite winning the FA Cup.

And Guardiola would welcome Sarri to England should he take over at Stamford Bridge.

"He's one of the absolute best," Guardiola told RMC Sport (via Football Italia).

"We judge people on what they've won, but the football played by Napoli this season has been out of this world. He did very well, seeing Napoli play is a spectacle.

"If he comes to the Premier League it'd be a pleasure to face him."

Sarri went close to leading Napoli to a first Scudetto since 1990 but ultimately fell short at the end, finishing four points behind Juventus despite amassing 91 points – the most of a runner-up in Serie A.

Where it went wrong for Napoli
A 1-0 victory over Juventus at the end of April saw Napoli move to within one point of their title rivals with four games remaining, and once again opened up the Serie A race.

But Juventus would go to to navigate their tougher fixtures, beating Inter in a thrilling comeback as well as Bologna, wrapping up the title with a draw against Roma in the penultimate match of the season.

And at the same time, Napoli lost 3-0 to Fiorentina and then drew with Juventus' rivals Torino to end their dreams.
