Carlo Ancelotti named as Napoli coach

Carlo Ancelotti has been named as the new coach of Napoli and has agreed a two year deal with an optional third, the club have announced.

He replaces Maurizio Sarri, who was at the helm for three years, and is the eighth coach in 14 years.

Ancelotti comes with plenty of experience having won 19 titles including four Champions Leagues and he has won the Bundesliga, the Premier League, Serie A and Ligue 1. He returns nine years later to Serie A where he was named coach of the year in 2001 and 2004 at Milan, the club where he won eight championships.

The target now for Ancelotti will be to win the title with Napoli, and go one step further than Sarri who finished second twice. In fact having picked up 91 points this season, it is the first time that an Italian club has reached 90 points and not won the title.

Sarri's legacy is that he has put Napoli back on the international map where they have been recognised for their fine football. "I like a lot watching Napoli and I learn a lot from Maurizio's teams," said Pep Guardiola after Napoli faced Manchester City this season.

In his first season, Sarri saw his team come second domestically, then in his second year they were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League and in his third they were knocked out by Juventus.

Ancelotti though faces a club with challenges ahead as several key players are set to leave like Mertens and Hamsik and he needs to stamp his authority on the team.
