Ryan Lowe pleased with Bury response in draw at AFC Wimbledon

Bury manager Ryan Lowe admitted a half-time rant was the catalyst for earning a final-day point against AFC Wimbledon as George Miller struck late to secure a 2-2 draw.

Wimbledon were two up at the break thanks to Dean Parrett and Kwesi Appiah but Neil Danns pulled a goal back after the break before Miller scored after 85 minutes to salvage a point.

Lowe said: “We had to give them a rollicking at half-time, but it was a constructive one.

“I told them that it’s the last game of the season and that plenty of people would be watching them: other managers, other clubs, family and fans.

“I told them not to go out on a whimper. They showed passion and pride in the second half.

“It was a game of two halves. We were a bit sloppy in the first half – we looked a bit tired and jaded, we couldn’t get the ball down.

“Fair play to them, they got in our faces a little bit. I thought we were outstanding second half, all the young lads especially. To come back and almost win it was a big plus for us.

“I’m always happy when you come to places like Wimbledon away and you get a result. We changed the shape section half, we went to three in midfield and two strikers, and got runners in behind. We were worthy of the one point and potentially could have had three.

“I’m always pleased with our character – it’s the mistakes that cost us.”

Dons midfielder Parrett put the hosts in front with a superb half-volley after Barry Fuller’s long throw fell to him at the back post.

Appiah doubled their advantage on 34 minutes, firing past the luckless Joe Murphy for his third goal for the club after hesitation in the Shakers’ backline.

Danns brought Bury back into the game 66 minutes, curling into the top corner after Dons goalkeeper George Long had come off his line to parry Jay O’Shea’s deep cross.

The Shakers earned only their 11th away point of the campaign courtesy of Miller, who met O’Shea’s delivery to head home late on.

Dons boss Neal Ardley said: “It was always going to be an open game, a hot day at the end of the season. We were better first half; they were better second half.

“The one thing we didn’t want to see was the injuries over the course of the game. They certainly disrupted us.

“Lyle [Taylor] and Kwesi [Appiah] up front in the first half were everything we hoped they would be at the start of the season and I was thinking ‘if only we had them together fit for more games this season’. Then we lose Lyle and then Kwesi made a run and felt something and had to come off.

“Lyle is not great. The main thing is that we think it is a ligament, so a few weeks’ injury rather than a break or Achilles. So, with a bit of luck he can rest it in a swimming pool or on a beach somewhere and he will soon recover.

“I am not going to sit here and say we have had wonderful season because we did not set out to finish 18th.

“But if at the start of the season we had been offered a trip to Wembley, to be in League One again next season and finish above a certain other team we would have taken it.”
