Red Bull Salzburg vs Marseille - Marco Rose vows to try everything to overcome Marseille

Red Bull Salzburg boss Marco Rose has vowed his men will “try everything to overpower” Marseille when they attempt to turn around their Europa League semi-final in Austria on Thursday.

The sides head into the second leg at the Red Bull Arena with Marseille having won the first 2-0 in the Stade Velodrome last week.

Florian Thauvin headed home a controversial 15th-minute opener – replays suggested the ball had also touched his hand on its way into the net – and substitute Clinton Njie then doubled the lead just after the hour mark.

Rose, quoted on Salzburg’s official website, said ahead of leg two: “We dominated the first leg for long stretches, and actually had Marseille under control.

“It is definitely the case that things are possible for us in the second leg. We have the chance on Thursday to snatch the momentum back to our side, and we want to put in another top performance in front of a full house.

“We need to set ourselves up for bringing maximum attacking power out onto the pitch and at the same time remaining patient.

“I had the feeling in Marseille that we were physically stronger and could have got more. The possibility of reaching the final is one Marseille have too, but we will try everything to overpower them and make them tired.”

Salzburg bounced back from a first-leg defeat by two goals in the quarter-finals, losing 4-2 at Lazio before triumphing 4-1 against the Italians at home.

They have beaten Marseille at home once already this season, defeating them 1-0 in the group stage.

Salzburg midfielder Amadou Haidara said: “We put in a very good performance in the (semi-final) first leg. We were lacking a bit of luck, unfortunately, and we didn’t get the away goal we wanted.

“We need to make up for that at home, and we need a performance like we had at home against Lazio. It will be very difficult, but it’s doable.”

Marseille boss Rudi Garcia has confirmed Yohann Pele will once again be in goal for the French side on Thursday, with Steve Mandanda not yet ready to return to action.

Garcia, quoted on uefa.com, added: “If we can score a goal quickly, it will be difficult for them to come back from that but there is no ideal scenario: we have to win and qualify.

“What we have done so far is not enough to earn a place in the history of the club.

“OM play their 58th game of the season tomorrow but I am not sensing any physical or mental fatigue from my players. As we saw last week, we still have legs at the end of the game.”

The teams are battling for the right to face either Atletico Madrid or Arsenal in the final in Lyon on May 16.
