Derby revive play-off hopes with victory over Cardiff

Cardiff’s automatic promotion hopes were dented as Derby revived their play-off hopes with a 3-1 win at Pride Park.

The visitors looked comfortable after Callum Paterson gave them a half-time lead but defensive errors allowed Cameron Jerome to score twice either side of a Matej Vydra strike as Derby ended a run of three defeats to move back into the Sky Bet Championship top six.

Derby had dropped top scorer Vydra to the bench along with David Nugent following Saturday’s defeat to Middlesbrough, while Cardiff made four changes from the team that beat Nottingham Forest.

After a scrappy opening 15 minutes, the first chance fell to Derby two minutes later when Andreas Weimann broke on the right and picked out Tom Lawrence but Neil Etheridge was quickly out to block his shot from eight yards.

A long clearance from Etheridge in the 23rd minute dropped for Junior Hoilett who volleyed well over from 20 yards but Cardiff were ahead five minutes later.

Joe Bennett crossed from the left and the ball went over Gary Madine and fell to Paterson who hit a swerving shot with the outside of his right foot inside Scott Carson’s near post.

Lawrence showed persistence in the 37th minute to pull the ball back from the byline but Weimann fired wide from 10 yards and the first half ended with Paterson shooting over from just outside the area.

Derby won a free-kick a couple of yards outside the area in the 53rd minute but Lawrence slammed it into a wall of blue shirts and as the rain swept in, Cardiff had a great chance to increase their lead.

Jamie Ward played in Hoilett in the 64th minute and he squared the ball for Madine who failed to make proper contact on the edge of the six-yard box.

It was a costly miss because Derby were level in the 69th minute when Cardiff failed to deal with a corner and Richard Keogh headed it back in for Jerome to hold off a defender and roll a shot past Etheridge.

Some of Cardiff’s composure had gone and an awful mistake by Yanic Wildschut put Derby ahead in the 81st minute when he allowed himself to be robbed near the goal line by Andre Wisdom who picked out Vydra to drive in his 21st goal of the season from 12 yards.

Wildschut buried his head in the turf but he had a chance to make amends when he could not quite turn in a shot at the back post before another mistake finished Cardiff off.

This time it was Sean Morrison who allowed Jerome to get past him and steer a shot wide of Etheridge and complete a stunning comeback by Derby.
