U’s win had the whole shebang – Joe Dunne

Cambridge’s win over Cheltenham “had everything, the whole shebang” said victorious boss Joe Dunne.

The U’s won 4-3 courtesy of Barry Corr’s strike nine minutes from the end.

They were 2-1 behind when they missed a penalty shortly before half-time – referee Brett Huxtable awarding a spot-kick despite Billy Waters scoring when the ball fell to him.

George Maris and Jevani Brown, who was successful with a second Cambridge spot-kick, put them 3-2 up before Corr struck shortly after Mo Eisa’s second goal of the game had made it 3-3.

Dunne said: “When those games come along they are really entertaining for everybody.

“I loved it, it’s exciting. It’s one where the emotions are up and down and all around the place and what I’m feeling is probably what we’re all feeling. It’s another three points and that’s what’s key.

“We started the game slowly. To their credit, with their system they caught us a bit and started the game really well.

“I didn’t feel we got anything going and when we had the ball we gave it back to them. Then we started to build into the game, we started to get into the areas that we wanted to get in but the vibe and energy wasn’t quite there.

“We needed to have a strong word with them at half-time and I thought we came out second half and really took it to them.

“We wanted to be more aggressive, get into them, move it and be quicker, which is what we’ve been doing in other games. When we got it going, we got it going. It looked like every time we went forward we could score.”

Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson rued his side’s inability to win the game having got themselves in front.

“That’s why we’re in this position in the league I suppose,” he said.

“We needed the experience on the pitch so when we’re in the lead we can stay in the lead.

“We’re blooding in a few young lads, and some of them did very well. In the first half we were superb. We looked confident, we were getting chances, Mo was getting in which he hasn’t for a little while.

“We scored three goals but unfortunately the most important goal was always going to be the next one after half-time, whether our lads could go out and cope with their onslaught, which obviously they were going to do. They were very upset about the penalty.

“It’s the game management that makes players top players. They can adjust to the player they are up against. You just have to cope every week. At the moment we don’t seem to have that experience to see the game out.”
