Sam Allardyce not annoyed by taunts from Everton fans

Sam Allardyce brushed off the taunts of Everton fans who turned on him during the 1-1 Premier League draw at Swansea.

Everton fans sang “f*** off Sam Allardyce” after he substituted winger Yannick Bolasie in the 76th minute and replaced him with central defender Ramiro Funes Mori.

Manager Allardyce – who spoke of his desire to remain at Goodison Park next season before the game – has been heavily criticised by Toffees supporters in recent months, but has not been publicly rebuked by them in such fashion.

After leading at the break, the Everton following sang: “We’re sh** and we’re one-nil up.”

Asked whether he was annoyed by the reaction of the Everton fans, Allardyce replied: “I never get annoyed by the fans, personally, because they wanted to see us play better.

“But you have to give some credit to the opposition – they don’t let you play better when they are fighting away for points.

“In the end we’ve got a very precious point. Yes, we would have all liked to play better.

“But there’s a big problem with our away results, changing that is a confidence issue, and in the last two away games we’ve tried to put that right.”

Former England boss Allardyce has steered Everton away from relegation danger since his appointment at the end of November.

But there has been unease about the style of play during his reign and, after being second best at Swansea for most of a frantic encounter, they have now won only once in eight away games.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was called into action several times before Everton scored against the run of play after 43 minutes when Swansea defender Kyle Naughton put through his own net.

Swansea continued to dominate after the break and Jordan Ayew levelled 19 minutes from time.

Seamus Coleman almost restored Everton’s lead when he hit the crossbar from close range, but 60 seconds later Allardyce made the substitution which saw a torrent of abuse rain down from the away end.

“That was a big battling point for us, we faced an opposition who are the form team at home in the league having beaten Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Burnley in their last four matches here,” Allardyce said.

“The important thing was the resilience of our team, getting the first goal was really important.

“We could have played better in possession but it was a good point against a good Swansea team.”

Swansea dropped two places to 17th after Crystal Palace and Huddersfield both registered home wins.

Carlos Carvalhal’s side are now five points clear of the drop zone following Southampton’s home defeat to Chelsea.

“We played like we weren’t under that pressure, with a big heart, but this is football,” said Swansea manager Carvalhal.

“This is a situation where we deserved more than one point but we are optimistic, if we play like that in the three home games and two away games we have left we will be fine.

“Jordan changed our game because he kept the ball, the team are able to breathe when he is on the pitch.”
