Danny Hylton is as good as some Premier League strikers – Nathan Jones

Luton manager Nathan Jones lavished striker Danny Hylton with praise after the Hatters moved a step closer to promotion from League Two.

Hylton scored twice in the 3-0 win against nine-man Yeovil that kept the Hatters three points behind leaders Accrington and eight clear of Exeter in fourth.

Luton’s opener was set up by Hylton, Elliot Lee finishing it off, before the striker scored from the penalty that saw Ryan Dickson dismissed.

Francois Zoko also saw red – after just 32 minutes – and Hylton added a third before half-time.

“For me he’s the best,” said Jones.

“I’ve worked with Championship strikers and he’s up there.

“He’s as good as people I’ve worked with at Brighton and they’re in the Premier League and there are still strikers there that I think Danny is as good as.

“He’s a great character, plays on the edge and is a pantomime villain at times but for me he’s a wonderful individual.”

Jones was not bothered with his side’s goalless second-half display.

“It was literally about the three points today, nothing else,” he added.

“Performance-wise we weren’t too concerned, as long as we got the three points that was the most important thing.

“I thought we were thoroughly professional from start to finish. We went positive with our team selection. It would have been easy after they scored six away from home last week (beating Coventry 6-2) to go a little more conservative.

“Second half was a little bit of a non event but we’ve got no issues with that. We’ve scored more goals than anyone else so we didn’t need to go out and have a goal fest. We kept possession and saw the game out. We came away with no injuries, no sendings off and a clean-sheet.”

It was a tough afternoon for the Glovers, whose boss Darren Way was disappointed with the referee and his assistants.

“Unfortunately the referee and the officials, as a team, lost their way a bit,” said Way.

“They need to review their game and perhaps become a little bit more professional. It destroys the game and it’s not like it’s the first time we’ve had it.

“I think there was an air of frustration from the supporters, from the players and I wanted them to control themselves.

“I said to Hylton after the game he’s a very good player. Supporters who have seen the last two Luton games have seen exactly the same thing – Hylton spins the channel and gets the penalty and that’s cleverness. You have to be able to deal with that.

“To come in at half-time and make sure we didn’t concede a(nother) goal was a tremendous effort. I was really proud of the way the players conducted themselves second half.

“I wanted them to enjoy it as well because we were in that moment and it was up to us to make the best of it.”
