Dino Maamria believes Stevenage on the up after beating Newport

Stevenage manager Dino Maamria believes his team’s 1-0 triumph at Newport County is proof they are capable of challenging at the top of the table.

The visitors took a well-earned lead after 43 minutes when Stevenage skipper Ronnie Henry crossed the ball to the back post for Chris Whelpdale to nod into the net.

And former Newport assistant boss Maamria wants his current side to keep improving after recording back-to-back victories.

“I’m delighted to get the three points here,” he said. “I had a great time at Newport, despite the results.

“I gave everything to the job here, I’m sorry we had to beat them because I’m a fan of the club and a fan of Mike Flynn as well.

“It was the most convincing performance since I’ve been back. That pleases me because we’re getting better in terms of our organisation and game plan.

“We showed our character today, we really limited them. It was all in the plan. The only thing is that we should have been more clinical and maybe scored two or three.

“That was a performance that showed we are heading in the right direction. It was like the old Stevenage who were pushing at the top of the league.

“I thought our players were different class out there today, we played the pitch and played the conditions really well.”

Newport have seen their play-off aspirations all-but extinguished following a run of only one win in 13 matches.

“We lost that game with our first-half performance,” said Newport manager Flynn.

“We could have closed the gap on the play-offs to six points so I don’t understand why our season seems to be fizzling out.

“It’s even more frustrating seeing the table, but I’ve given them a rude awakening.

“It was a terrible goal to concede, a free header in the box. I wish we’d had one of those, though we probably would have missed it.

“They wanted it more, they won more challenges and they looked stronger than us. It was a completely different performance to the one against Coventry.

“We could still be out there now and not have scored.

“The play-offs look improbable but we have to keep battling, a few of them in there are out of contact and you’re only as good as your last game.

“We just played against a team with nothing to play for and they looked more up for it.”
