John Coleman unimpressed with Accrington despite sixth successive win

Accrington clinched a sixth successive win by beating Notts County 1-0 but Stanley manager John Coleman was ambivalent about their performance.

Accrington maintained their three-point lead atop Sky Bet League Two thanks to Mark Hughes’ ninth-minute goal, but County had a couple of notable chances to at least snatch a point.

Jonathan Forte hit the woodwork while Jorge Grant fired wide in a good position, leading Coleman to say: “I am delighted with the result but have mixed feelings about the performance.

“We worked hard, we knew it was going to be tough but we went ahead and then invited Notts County back into it.

“I would like it to be more comfortable, with two or three goals, as then you can relax more but we are finding ways to win at the moment.

“I think a couple more wins will get us over the line for promotion but we can only look at the next game.

“I am getting nervous, I cleared a few balls into the box and had about 15 shots, I feel like I have played but the players are loving and embracing every minute of it.”

Stanley had a scare as goalkeeper Aaron Chapman was involved in a minor car accident on his way to the Wham Stadium with Jonny Maxted making his league debut.

“Aaron went to hospital as a precaution and when then happens at 1pm it does shake you up, but Jonny came in and did well,” Coleman added.

Kevin Nolan made seven changes to County’s line-up from Friday’s draw with Wycombe as he attempted to arrest a mini-slump in form, and he was disappointed they did not test Maxted enough.

The Magpies have now taken only two points from an available last 12 as they slipped to fifth in the standings, seven points off the automatic promotion places.

Nolan said: “They had a new keeper in but we never put him under any pressure.

“We had two good chances but both were wide and we didn’t test him.

“We had enough possession we just did not do enough with it in the final third and that’s disappointing.

“I made seven changes but it shows the quality in our squad as there were positives in the performance.

“They are where we were a few months ago and we have got to get back to winning ways, we have got to learn from Accrington.

“They weren’t stand-out better than us, we matched them in some areas, but we didn’t give their keeper a save to make.

“I still believe we can make automatic promotion. There are 15 points to play for and we are going for all of them.”
