Xabi Alonso advises Lewandowski to stay at Bayern Munich

Retired Spanish footballer Xabi Alonso has advised his former Bayern Munich teammate Robert Lewandowski to ignore the advances of Real Madrid and to remain at the German juggernaut.

For years, Lewandowski has been linked with a move to Los Blancos, particularly once clubs were made aware that he would be leaving Borussia Dortmund, but instead he opted for Bayern and has a contract with the club until 2021.

"He is definitely one of the best No.9s in the world," Alonso said about Lewandowski to Sportbuzzer.

"However, I think that he is best at Bayern.

"Every year he scores goals, he knows the club, he knows the league, and he wins titles.

"If he wants to have a different experience, that is something that he must decide for himself."

Bayern look set to wrap up their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title in the coming weeks and Alonso believes that the lack of competition is damaging the league.

"Borussia Dortmund have done well for years," he noted.

"But instead of making the gap smaller, it has increased in recent years.

"This is not good for the league; it needs excitement.

"Bayern need a rival, and it does not matter if it is Dortmund, Schalke or Leipzig."

In the interview, Alonso also spoke about his playing career and some of the most difficult players he came up against.

"As a young player it was easy to impress," he stated.

"But when I first played against Zinedine Zidane as a 20-year-old, I only thought 'Wow, what is that?'

"He managed to make difficult things look easy.

"I loved watching him play and hated playing against him."

Alonso was later able to work with Zidane, who was an assistant when the Basque player was at Real Madrid.
