Aspin praises Port Vale’s fighting spirit against Stevenage

Port Vale manager Neil Aspin praised his side’s ‘fighting spirit’ after they came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Stevenage at Vale Park.
Early goals in each half from Luke Amos and Ben Kennedy gave the visitors the advantage, but substitute Donovan Wilson and Luke Hannant, who scored a stunning equaliser, earned the hosts a share of the spoils.
Aspin was disappointed with the manner in which the goals were conceded, but felt his team could have nicked all three points towards the end of the match.
He said: “Obviously for people coming to the game today it was certainly a mixture of emotions. It’s never the best thing to concede in the first ten minutes, especially a goal that could have been avoided.
“And then without playing particularly well we’ve had a couple of good chances and shouldn’t have been behind at half-time.
“So you think if you can start the second-half and get on the front foot and back in the game, but again worst possible start to go 2-0 down.
“And at that stage with the confidence, which obviously dips when you concede the second goal, and with the crowd being restless and ready to vent their frustration, we’ve done really well to come back into the game.
“All supporters want to see some fighting spirit and some effort and I think they got that in the last 30 minutes where we scored two really good goals and pushed and tried to get the winner. They’ve done everything they could do to try and get the three points.”
Stevenage boss Darren Sarll said the result was tough to take.
He added: “Normally when you come to Port Vale and come away with a point, it’s a decent, hard-earned away point, but its the manner of course that makes you think differently and almost say what if?
“Yet again this situation has happened again and its tough. Two weeks in a row we’ve conceded two absolute wonder strikes from the players’ wrong foot.
“Of course we’re disappointed not to have won the game. We played well first-half, I didn’t think we played great, but strategically we were very good in what we wanted to do. It was important to stop [Danny] Pugh and [Michael] Tonge passing.
“We did it very well, but in the second-half when they got into their flow, that was obviously the key element of the game in that Tonge and Pugh had too much room to move the ball.
“We put ourselves in a great position early in that second-half and really we should be seeing it out.
“We’re not talking about Stevenage being the first team to be two-up and draw 2-2. This has been happening for years in football.”
