Darren Sarll wants more leadership from Stevenage

Darren Sarll hit out at Stevenage’s lack of leadership after his side conceded two late goals to draw 2-2 against Crewe.

The hosts were cruising towards the three points when Dean Bowditch, making his home debut since switching from Northampton, scored either side of half time.

But Perry Ng pulled one back before Charlie Kirk scored a last-gasp equaliser to gain Crewe a vital point in their relegation fight.

“I’m absolutely furious with that. What a manner in which to throw the game away,” said Sarll.

“The thing that hurts me the most is when we’re seeing that game out we’ve got more experienced players on the pitch. It’s not as if they’re young lads.

“The manner in which we didn’t see that out is appalling. They’ll [players] pay. No-one can stomach that, not the players, no-one so they’ll pay.

“It’s another one of those comfortable afternoons.  Their first goal is a right-footed full-back cutting in on his left and finding the top corner from 25 yards.

“We then obviously invited pressure on ourselves and the way we didn’t manage the game in the minutes leading to that second goal were stomach-churning.

“It ultimately ends up with the ball in the box and them scoring so it’s disappointing.”

Crewe are now seven points clear of the drop zone, and one clear of rivals Port Vale, with just 10 games of the season to play – but for so long it looked like they would leave empty-handed.

And manager Dave Artell insist the spirit they have in their side will see them over the line.

“When you’re 2-0 down you give yourself a mountain to climb. We gifted them two goals, they should have scored a third and put the game to bed,” he said.

“We’ve got fight, we’ve got spirit. We’ve known that for a while.

“It was a cracking finish form Perry, an incredible goal. It gave us a shot in the arm to go and get that equaliser.

“For the last 15 minutes they were dead on their feet after pressing for 75 minutes and we got them in the end.

“We’ve got quality to get goals and we’ve shown that in the end. We were knocking on the door and at the end I think a point is a fair result.

“We beat them at home in injury time and we got the draw here in injury time.

“Thankfully we’ve got a point which gets us going in the right direction. At two down if you’d have given us a point I’d have bitten your arm off.

“It’s a terrific point away from us, especially after we made two mistakes to go 2-0 down.”
