The Manchester United boss has been keeping close tabs on the £40m-rated midfielder with a view to making a bid in June.

Frenchman Doucoure joined the Hornets from Rennes in 2016 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the most powerful midfielders in the top flight.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have also been monitoring Doucoure, who could find himself at the centre of huge transfer scrap at the end of the season.

The Hornets will refuse to sell one of their prize assets on the cheap though.

Mourinho sent scouts to watch Doucoure, 25, in action against West Brom at Vicarage Road on Saturday as he looks to strengthen his midfield for next season.

The Portuguese wants to sign at least two central midfielders as he prepares for life without Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini.

Carrick will retire to join Mourinho's coaching staff, while Fellaini is poised to leave after failing to agree a new deal at Old Trafford.

Doucoure has been the Hornet's most impressive and consistent performer this season.

He has made 30 appearances, scoring seven goals to become Javier Gracia's leading scorer.

Mourinho has been impressed with his athleticism, power and technical ability and reckons he would make a huge impression at Manchester United.

He has also targeted Napoli ace Jorginho in a £50m deal as he gets set for a midfield overhaul.

Doucoure is under contract until 2020 but would find a move to United impossible to resist if Mourinho came calling.

When asked about his future last month, Doucoure revealed he will assess his options and said: "We'll see what the state of play is in the summer and then we can ask questions."
