Ollie Palmer late strike denies David Flitcroft winning start

Former Stag Ollie Palmer ruined David Flitcroft’s first game in charge of Mansfield as the Lincoln substitute struck a late equaliser to ensure a dramatic local derby at Field Mill ended 1-1.

Flitcroft saw his new charges take a 49th-minute lead through Joel Byrom’s first-ever goal for Mansfield, but Palmer fired home at the death to steal a point.

There was controversy as Imps skipper Luke Waterfall was shown a red card after the celebrations for seemingly throwing a bottle into the stand after it was initially launched from a section of the home crowd.

Town defender Rhys Bennett also saw red in injury-time for a second booking.

Former Stags frontman Matt Rhead prodded a shot goalwards after 12 minutes, but Mal Benning cleared his effort.

Danny Rose fired a low shot wide for the hosts, before Conrad Logan saved Waterfall’s powerful low drive.

A good move down the Stags’ left-hand side ended with Rose firing over the bar.

Mansfield brought Byrom on for the start of the second-half and he made an immediate impact, heading Hayden White’s cross past Ryan Allsop.

Ex-stag Matt Green struck a bicycle kick over from two yards as City sought an equaliser, and in the last minute, Palmer fired home from close range, although the visitors were then stunned to see Waterfall sent off for a straight red.

There was still time for Bennett to be dismissed for Mansfield as he was booked for a second time.
