Cardiff manager Neil Warnock delighted to take victory at Ipswich

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was delighted with his team’s 1-0 victory over Ipswich at Portman Road which gave the second-placed side a four-point cushion over the chasing pack in the Sky Bet Championship.

A bizarre goal in the 65th minute from Kenneth Zohore won the game for the visitors in front of only 13,205 fans, which beat the previous record low attendance of the season of 13,212, set in the home game against Burton.

Warnock had praise for £6million striker Gary Madine who came off the bench in the second half and who won a ball in the air following a free-kick for Zohore to score while he was on the ground.

The winner came from a free-kick midway into the Ipswich half which was headed on by Madine.

Zohore fell when trying to connect with the ball but managed to get a touch while on the ground to find the bottom right hand corner of Bartosz Bialkowski’s goal.

“I thought he changed the game when he came on and Zohore is never going to get a nice sweet strike with his left foot it’s always going to be an awkward, horrible bouncy thing and I love to see them go in and it was great, especially with our fans being down the end he scored,” said Warnock.

“He fell down and got up quick and he enjoyed the pressure off him a little bit with Gary playing there.

“At the moment it’s looking at what we’ve got on emergency ward 10 and hopefully we can get a few bodies back.

“But I thought Mick’s lads put a good shift in and he should be proud of them … there was not much wrong with their effort.

“But it was fantastic to come here and get three points.”

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy said he was very disappointed with the result.

“I thought the lads were excellent and gave everything as usual … they were just very, very good. Having lost a few players in the last few days the ones who came in I thought they were great,” said McCarthy.

“Playing against 6ft 5in centre forwards they may beat one or two of my players in the air and I thought it was a soft free-kick (which led to the Cardiff goal).

“I was delighted with the team and they gave everything and I was very pleased with the front three. I thought they were very good.”

But there was bad news regarding David McGoldrick who damaged a tendon in his groin and is likely to be out for the rest of the season.
