Darren Sarll impressed with Stevenage’s performance in victory over Yeovil

Boss Darren Sarll thought Stevenage could have scored six as they snapped a five-game winless streak with a 4-1 victory over Yeovil.

Goals from Luke Amos, Jon Smith, Danny Newton and Ben Kennedy eased the hosts to victory, with the Glovers’ consolation goal coming from Ryan Seager.

The win put daylight between Stevenage and Yeovil in the table and left Sarll looking up the league rather than down.

“I thought it was a great performance from the lads, they showed lots of enthusiasm and lots of energy and deserved the victory,” he said.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful to the opposition, but if anything we could have won by more.

“I’m beginning to wonder when we’ll ever get a penalty but both Jack King and Luke Amos were fouled inside the box and both should have been penalties – it could have been 6-1.

“But we played some good football and scored some great goals and I’m pleased to get the win.

“I thought Mark McKee was outstanding in midfield and showed just what a good player he is going to be.

“His passing and his all-round game was excellent, he controlled things in midfield and has also started to get forward a bit more as well.

“We had players missing as well and hopefully we’ll start to get them back but I couldn’t fault the lads today.”

Amos’ curling 25-yard effort fired the home side in front on 16 minutes.

And after both Kennedy and McKee were denied, Smith found the bottom corner with a powerful low drive from 20 yards to put Stevenage two up.

The third came when Newton converted a Kennedy cross a minute into the second half.

And on 58 minutes the game was over as Ben Wilmot set up Kennedy to make it four, with Seager pouncing on a late error for the Glovers’ goal – leaving manager Darren Way disappointed with his side’s display.

“Football has a funny way of catching you out and today we had no leadership and no intensity,” he said.

“We went 2-0 down in the first half and just allowed them too much space to score those goals, there was no blocking or tackling and we gifted them those goals.

“There was no urgency or commitment from my players to win the ball back and it didn’t look like my team out there.

“This is a reality check because if you come away from home and play like that without winning your challenges then that’s what can happen.

“We need to work hard now and some of the players need to look at themselves as individuals because we just didn’t compete out there.”
