Darren Way proud of Yeovil’s latest win

Darren Way was delighted to see an early penalty from Sam Surridge and stoppage-time strike from Francois Zoko seal a 2-0 victory for his Yeovil side at home to bottom-club Barnet.

It is now three wins and 10 points from the Glovers’ last four Sky Bet League Two matches.

“I’m very pleased for my players. My young team went up against a Barnet team that were very aggressive at times. I feel proud,” Way said.

“We started very brightly and on the front foot and made it very difficult for a Barnet team that have been on a good run.

“When you’re down at the bottom you’ve got nothing to lose and it was almost like a game of basketball. It was end-to-end. At times they were playing a 4-2-4 and leaving four players up front, so it’s extremely difficult.”

The hosts largely had goalkeeper Jonny Maddison to thank for the win.

Maddison was making his first start of the season and made a string of fine saves to keep the Bees at bay.

“I’m very pleased for Jonny. I thought he was calm and assured,” Way continued.

“He’s worked extremely hard. We’ve had some uncomfortable times and I said to him he had to wait for his time. He wanted to move in the window, but this is his opportunity. You’re judged on your reputation and with the supporters singing his name, his reputation is very high.”

Visiting manager Graham Westley felt his team should have at least taken a point.

The Bees created very little in the first half but hit a post and had several other great chances after the break.

“If you look at the match stats we had the better of the possession over the 90 minutes but 45 per cent of the ball in the first half. That tells you the story,” Westley said.

“They got out of the traps and we looked like we were still sitting on the coach. We didn’t go forward with any purpose. If I’m honest, we could have been further behind by half-time.

“We suffered I think, in the early stages of the game, to get our legs going and find that sense of urgency that you need to win games.

“It was a disappointing start to the game, we took it on the chin and the players deserve credit for a fantastic recovery in the second half.

“Their goal lead a charmed life and their goalkeeper performed admirably well. If we’d got that equaliser, or even gone on to win it in the second half, I think it would have been deserved on the balance of play.”
