Ryan Lowe praises Bury’s ‘never-say-die’ attitude after Bradford draw

Manager Ryan Lowe praised the “never-say-die” attitude of his players as bottom club Bury twice came from behind to earn 2-2 draw at Bradford City with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

Bradford, who this week sacked popular manager and former fans favourite player Stuart McCall after a run of six consecutive defeats in all competitions, went in front after 57 minutes when Tim Dineg diverted Alex Giliead’s angled shot into net, but Bury equalised four minutes later through Nathan Cameron.

The Bantams, reduced to 10 men when defender Matt Kilgallon was shown a second yellow card after tripping George Miller on the edge of the box after 79 minutes, thought they had won the game when substitute Shay McCartan restored their lead in the 89th minute.

However, Bury cut short Bradford’s celebrations with a second equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a close-range header from George Miller.

Lowe said: “We are disappointed not to win the match, but happy to get a point after Bradford scored their second goal. I am proud of the boys, their willingness to come back, their never-say-die attitude. They never know when they are beaten.

“I was a bit annoyed when their second goal went in, but we made a couple of changes to get a goal back and we have gained a point which could be massive for us.

“Bradford are a good team, but we were the better side today without being disrespectful to them and we should have won the game.

“That said, we have two wins and two draws from the last four matches and if we can continue that form I am confident we can get out of trouble.”

The Bantams are still hanging on to sixth place despite a wretched run that has seen take only one point from six matches.

Greg Abbott, appointed caretaker manager following the sacking of McCall, his former Bradford team-mate, said: “I am still raw – Stuart goes down as the most popular man at the football club.

“So, in the circumstances and the emotions around the club this week a win would have been great, but the response from the players tells me the group want to put this club back on track and rolling in the right direction.

“The goals we conceded should have been avoided and I am not overjoyed at having to settle for a 2-2 draw, but we have stopped the rot (of defeats).

“It is a slim morsel, but after the week the players have had they can stand up and take a bow.”
